The Battle for Public Opinion

The online landscape transformed the dynamics of public opinion and communication strategies rapidly due to the dissemination of information and the ability for anyone to voice their perspective. The internet has made information more easily accessible to a broader audience who are capable of now participating in public discourse. Now more marginalized voices have platforms to speak, providing diverse perspectives to be heard. This can challenge democracy, changing the ways of "traditional" ideas and structures. This can also present challenges as a result of widespread misinformation, influencing public opinion and spreading false ideas. The online landscape also influences potential implications on interpersonal relationships both positively and negatively. This digital age of communication allows society to form relationships with individuals from any distance. However, with the lack of physical interaction can come isolation.

Here's an interesting video on how public opinion is swayed through digital media.

A notable campaign that influenced public opinion is the #MeToo Movement. A movement that spread awareness on sexual harrasment and sexual abuse of women. The movement began on social media platforms, encouraging survivors to share experiences publicly using #MeToo. This united survivors and created solidarity and empowerment among women. As the movement grew, more individuals began telling stories, and spreading awareness which prompted important discussions revolving around consent and workplace power dynamics, as well as giving a voice to those who may have felt silenced. Through digital influence the movement spread resulting in cultural, societal and workplace changes.
Ethical considerations that individuals and organizations should consider when participating in a battle for public view online is sharing accurate information, respecting privacy, being inclusive, and overall being authentic and transparent to viewers.
